Even though R2 is not yet done, I decided to start a walle project yesterday. I looked at the plans in the Walle builders group , but then decided on another direction. I am using a sketchup model from the 3d warehouse as a model to derive dxf from for 3d printing…

So I am once again building a new R2, but I have a new tool at my arsenal. A 3d printer. this time I plan on making every single part myself, no resin parts, just abs printed plastic and styrene. I am using the eggcrate frame designed by frank Pirz, and his egg crate designed legs, the strongest legs I have ever seen, and they are lightweight plastic…. amazing job Frank! You might ask what happened to my last R2, well Make a wish of San Francisco approached me about a sick boy named Zachary, and well.. R2 is now guarding over Zachary while he recovers from his illness. Anyway, here is a pic the day before R2 went to join Zack….
following is a new pic of the eggcrate legs and frame..
if interested in Franks awesome designs, check out his site for plans or packages you can purchase. media conversions
anyway, cheers for the night, check out my creations on thingiverse!
So I have been negligent in updating things. But since the last post I have added a new weapon to my arsenal for creating an R2d2 from scratch…. A 3d Printer….. Now with that and the CNC machine, there is no part of R2 that I would have to buy. No dependencies on people doing “Parts Runs” or as I like to call it “Kit runs”. A true builder does just that, builds. A model maker buys a kit and puts it together. Most of my drawings and files will be moving to “thingiverse.com” shortly. It will be a resource for a truly open source home built R2d2.
Ok, anyway, today I have been working on the legs, the legs are the egg crate design from r2d2.media-conversions.com , the design is awesome, and the legs are strong as hell! The parts fit together like a store bought model kit and is just perfect. Props to Frank, his designs are superior to all others I have seen. I am also in the middle of modeling some of the detail parts like the front vents for 3d printing, stay tuned!!
